about

This song's for Bob Dylan. I doubt he'' ever hear it but he's been such an inspiration for me that I couldn't help but pay homage. I'd especially like to talk with him as it seems he's dealt with a lot of this shit and perhaps he could lend a kid a hand. It's based on his song 'Song for Woody" which he took from Woody Guthrie's '1913 Massacre' (worth a listen if you haven't heard it, unions in Michigan, and such). I'm hardly the first to keep the tradition going but I'm in good company. We really do owe our lives to Dylan and everyone involved in the cultural revolution of the 60s (despite how warped and twisted it has become). I'm struggling with lack of spirit in the world now, as many are, but without them, we wouldn't even be able to see it. What rock and roll, the counterculture, the hippies, etc. were all about was reviving spirit. Yes, in hindsight we can look back and say it was naive and idealistic, but what did you expect them to do? They woke up to an ossifying world that was becoming increasingly mechanistic. The only thing left to do was break any and all conventions and scream from the rooftops "Hey, everyone! Did you forget about love??" in the hopes that SOMEONE might hear the message and do something about it. The Military-Industrial Complex certainly heard and correctly recognized it as a threat to its very existence and shut that shit down. Since then the deconstructionists have rabidly been increasing their ability to tear about society (perhaps forgetting WHY they're doing that in the process) and the MIC has been ramping up its ability to end all life on the planet. Meanwhile, we're all wondering why we feel horrified, hopeless, and depressed all the time. Maybe we should do something about that.

lyrics

I'm out here a thousand miles from my home
Walking the road of the men who've gone down
Seeing the world of people and things
Dear paupers and peasants and princes and kings

Hey old Bobby I'm borrowing your song
To sing about this funny world that's somehow still hanging on
Everybody's fighting it don't seem we have long
So I look for some wisdom in all the old folk songs

And hey old Bobby I know you don't need to hear
All these things you've been singing for your many long years
But seeing all the hate and the rage and the fear
I'm not sure we've been listening, not opening our ears

Here's to The Stones and The Doors and Zeppelin as well
And all you crazy guys that let us raise up hell
The world was missing something and you helped put it back
So let's keep it all in mind and get this world back on track

I'm not saying you were wrong we just took it too far
I can't spend my whole life trying to be just like you are
But the one thing I've wanted above all else
Was to say I got tangled up in a little bit of blues myself
